An Antiracism Approach to Conducting, Reporting, and Evaluating Pediatric Critical Care Research
Reporting race and ethnicity without consideration for the complexity of these variables is unfortunately common in research. This practice exacerbates the systemic racism present in healthcare and research, of which pediatric critical care is not immune. Scientifically, this approach lacks rigor, as people are grouped into socially derived categories that are often not scientifically justified, and the field is denied the opportunity to examine closely the true associations between race/ethnicity and clinical outcomes. In this Special Article for Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, we introduce an antiracism approach to con...

Sustaining Careers of Physician-Scientists in Neonatology and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine: Formulating Supportive Departmental Policies.
Abstract Understanding mechanisms of childhood disease and development of rational therapeutics are fundamental to progress in pediatric intensive care specialties. However, Division Chiefs and Department Chairs face unique challenges when building effective laboratory-based research programs in Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care, owing to high clinical demands necessary to maintain competence as well as financial pressures arising from fund flow models and the current extramural funding climate. Given these factors, the role of institutional support that could facilitate successful transition of promising juni...

Developing Physician-Scientists in the Fields of Neonatology and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine: An Effort to Formulate a Departmental Policy
Both patient care and research are fundamental to the missions of academic pediatric medical centers in the US. The value of training physicians to perform basic science, clinical, and translational research is well recognized, and it is supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through several mechanisms, including mentored career development awards (K awards). These awards most often are used to provide physicians the opportunity to develop their scientific skills under the supervision of a mentor at the start of their academic careers. Such time, protected from the burden of clinical duties, is invaluable, gi...

Patient and Family Engagement in the ICU: Untapped Opportunities and Under Recognized Challenges.
Abstract The call for meaningful patient and family engagement in healthcare and research is gaining impetus. Healthcare institutions and research funding agencies increasingly encourage clinicians and researchers to work actively with patients and their families to advance clinical care and research. Engagement is increasingly mandated by healthcare organizations and is becoming a prerequisite for research funding. In this article, we review the rationale and the current state of patient and family engagement in patient care and research in the intensive care unit (ICU). We identify opportunities to strengthen en...
